University of Tübingen

Uni Tublingen pic

The University of Tübingen (official name: Eberhard Karls University Tübingen) was founded in 1477.
The university traditionally has had a very high academic reputation. It is associated with eleven Nobel laureates, especially in the fields of medicine and chemistry.

Among the alumni of the university are federal and state ministers, federal presidents, EU commissioners and judges of the Federal Constitutional Court. Today, the University of Tübingen is one of eleven German Excellence Universities.

Institute of Sports Science

The Institute of Sports Science at the University of Tübingen was the first sports science institute in the Federal Republic of Germany at a full university with the right to award doctorates. Over the last years, the Institute has regularly achieved top positions in the national research rankings in sports science. About 900 students are currently studying at the Institute of Sports Science.

The institute (Head of institute: Prof. Dr. Ansgar Thiel) consists of five research departments:
Sport Economics, Sport Management and Media Research (Chair: Prof. Dr. Tim Pawlowski)
Sport Psychology and Research Methods (Chair: Prof. Dr. Oliver Höner)
Sports Biomechanics and Exercise Science (Chair: Prof. Dr. Veit Wank)
Social Sciences of Sport and Health (Chair: Prof. Dr. Ansgar Thiel)
Education and Health Research (Chair: Prof. Dr. Gorden Sudeck)

In 2019, the Institute of Sports Science and the Department of Sports Medicine (University Clinic Tübingen; Head of Department: Prof. Dr. Andreas Nieß) founded the Interfaculty Research Institute for Sports and Physical Activity (Speakers: Prof. Dr. Ansgar Thiel/ Prof. Dr. Andreas Nieß). The Interfaculty Research Institute for Sport and Physical Activity is to serve as a central forum for sport- and movement-related research at the University of Tübingen.
Members of the Institute have many collaborations with regional and national sport and health organizations, but also with researchers from other scientific disciplines. The Institute is particularly committed to interdisciplinary research, especially in the areas of education, performance and health.

For many decades, research at the Institute has been published mainly in German journals and books and had a strong influence on German sports science. In recent years, research activities have increasingly become international. Today, researchers at the Institute are members of a number of editorial boards of international journals in sports science and physical activity research.
